9. hiking Cerro Del Cucurucho

Weekend is here and this means I have time for some exercise. I went for the same hike as 2 weeks ago. But the last time I did a loop which took me only half way up the hill which is 2,623m asl. For the reference, Mt. Garibaldi in Squamish is only 50m taller. Also, no glaciers here … The hike is basically up and the same way down. Total distance is almost 17km. It is a steady grind with no places to rest. Up, up and up. The path gets noticeably steeper from the half way point up. No way I could take my GSA on that grade. Maybe my KTM but if I would stop, I’d have to turn around. I hit the cloud deck about ⅔ of the way up. Already drenched in sweat, the cloud moisture made it even worse. And it got much colder as well. But the clouds gave it kinda spooky atmosphere. It was very dark under thick jungle canopy despite being almost noon. There were few viewpoints along the way but all I could see was white clouds. I finally reached the top after what felt like an eternity. 2:44 hrs. Beautiful meadow at the top with awesome views if only I’d have an X-ray vision. Or on a cloudless day. No such luck today. The fog was rolling around and I was getting cold very quickly. Group of people showed up so I start heading down the same way I came up. Those volcanos around are pretty scary. The most active, the El Fuego erupts constantly every few minutes. I couldn’t see it for the forrest but I could hear the eruptions. It was like an artillery shells constantly exploding. I wouldn’t want to be around when it all goes kaboom. It happened many times in the past and that is the prime reason why the capital city has moved from Antigua to Guatemala City where it is more save. Anyway, the hike down was uneventful and took me exactly 2 hrs. So 5 hrs total, including a short break at the top. To say I was very tired would be an understatement. Luckily there is a pool and a jacuzzi at my palace and I took a full advantage of it. Another good day in the office 👍 Back to school for one more week of Español.
